August 4
I put Ben in charge of making sure we woke up on time to go see the castle he wanted to see so bad since I wasn’t too excited about making the trip. We needed to wake up around 7:30 am to make it too the train. At 7:58 am, Tiff and I were still sleeping when Ben announced that we could catch the train if we left in two minutes. We both rolled over and went back to sleep. We ended up getting up at 10:30 am. I guess we shouldn’t have stayed up watching the Simpsons lasts night. Ben half-heartedly asked tried to convince us that we could catch the 11:00 am train to the castle. I told him that they could go ahead while I stayed back and cleaned the apartment. This plan didn’t go over so well. Needless to say, we didn’t end up accomplishing much during the day. You know the day was uneventful when the highlights consist only of the meals eaten that day. For a belated breakfast, we ate fried potatoes and Ben and I each had a protein shake. I also ate the other half of the cake I bought the day before. We ended up buying supplies for a fruit salad and some tortellini for dinner. I was in charge of cutting up the fruit salad (just like Sarah taught me) including lemon juice sprinkled over the fruit to keep it fresh. We then enjoyed our last cooked meal in the apartment since we had to do dishes to get everything ready for departure. Ben and I had bought a cheesecake desert that we planned on splitting for breakfast, but after I watched him gobble down his half while waiting for dinner I had to try a bit after dinner. Even though I was stuff from our meal, I still managed to eat my entire half. It feels good to be eating like an American again. I’m sure any weight I had lost over the past six weeks was negated from the time we met Sarah until now.
After dinner had concluded, the moment we had been dreading all week finally commenced. We began packing all our stuff (which somehow seems to have doubled) just to find the floor again. After Ben did dishes, I swept the floor with a hand sweeper and shook out our blankets. It was amazing how much dirt we could track in over the course of a few days. The best part of the cleaning was when Tiff found an extra hotel toothbrush in her bag. Ben assumed possession of it and brushed his teeth with toothpaste for the first time in over six weeks. He did have a toothbrush to start the trip, but after only using it without water or toothpaste and never rinsing it out, it became quite rancid. After the toothbrush began to smell like a dead carcass, it got thrown away and Ben’s teeth haven’t seen a brush since. The discovery of this new toothbrush was a blessing to us all.
We are now approaching our last hours here at the apartment and I’m finding it harder and harder to face this reality. We already have a hostel booked in Prague, where we will be heading tomorrow, so hopefully we can be slowly weaned off from the good life while in Prague. I know there will come a day soon when we will be back to sleeping in a park and living off baguettes, but at least we only have less than three weeks until we land in the Land of the Free.
